oh gosh…

Except that the Spanish didn’t wipe out the Classical Maya? The Classical Mayan Civilization (ie the one that produced the calendar)  ended around 900 CE (The culture continued but the large cities were generally abandoned. Their cultural ideas though still existed along with the general ideas on time and the calendar
ALSO
EUROPEANS DIDN’T WIPE OUT *ALL* OF THEM.
THE MAYAN PEOPLE STILL EXIST.
OH AND THEY’RE PRETTY SURE THAT THE WORLD ISN’T GOING TO END.
WHY? BECAUSE THAT ISN’T WHAT THE END OF THE ERA MEANS TO THEM.
SO HOW ‘BOUT WE JUST SHUT UP AND LISTEN TO THE PEOPLE WHO PRODUCED THIS CALENDAR?

“Anthropologists visit the temple sites,” Mr. Barrios says, “and read the stelas and inscriptions and make up stories about the Maya, but they do not read the signs correctly. It’s just their imagination…Other people write about prophecy in the name of the Maya. They say that the world will end in December 2012. The Mayan elders are angry with this. The world will not end. It will be transformed. The indigenous have the calendars, and know how to accurately interpret it, not others.”
